7 Days Erg Chegaga and Lake Iriki Long Trek

The caravan leaves M'hamid and crosses the plateau below Djebel Bani, reaching the oasis of Oued Lemhasser after five to six hours of walking. Camp at the oasis.

A long day of around 20 km over open reg with the dune line growing on the horizon.

Camp at the foot of the Chegaga dunes.

Five hours of walking through the dune field to the Bougarn dunes, a quieter erg west of the main crests. Camp among the sand.

The route leaves the dunes for the flats of the old lake, where fossils lie on the surface and scattered acacias mark the old shoreline. Camp near the lake bed.

A stage across the plain and back towards the acacia country of Oued Naam, following wells used by herding families. Camp at the wadi.

A shorter day north through the small ergs, with time in the afternoon on the dunes of Lihoudi. Final camp.

Around three hours of walking back to M'hamid, arriving late morning, followed by transfer to Zagora or onward arrangements.
