Lake Iriki and Nomad Villages Day Trip

1 Day

Overview

Lake Iriki was once a shallow inland lake fed by the Draa; today it is a dry plain of cracked ground, fossil beds and scattered acacia west of Erg Chegaga.

The day crosses it by 4×4, stopping at herding encampments along the way, and returns by the northern piste, which makes it a loop rather than a there-and-back.

Trip Highlights

  • The dry bed of Lake Iriki, a former inland lake
  • Fossil ground and acacia stands on the old shoreline
  • Encampments of families who still move with their herds
  • Wide open driving with no track to follow
  • A loop route with a different piste on the return
